In Spain, an archaeology dig yielded ‘crystal Weapons.’ 5,000-Year-Old

The majority of them are constructed of stone, however researchers in Spain discovered remarkable rock crystal weaponry. These weapons, which date back to at least 3000 BCE, include an exquisite crystal dagger that would have required tremendous talent to create.
The amazing find was made in the Montelirio tholos megalithic tomb, which is located in southern Spain. This massive site, which runs over 143 feet, is made up of gigantic slate slabs.
It was discovered between 2007 and 2010, and a study of the crystal tools was published five years later by academics from the University of Granada, the University of Seville, and the Spanish Higher Research Council. They also discovered 25 arrowheads and cores for constructing the weapons, in addition to the dagger.
Rock crystal is widely found in late prehistoric Iberian sites, according to the study, although it is rarely explored in depth. To figure out what these particular weapons were used for, we need to look at the circumstances in which they were discovered.
What exactly was discovered in the Montelirio tholos?
Montelirio tholos included the bones of at least 25 persons. According to previous research, at least one male and numerous females perished after consuming poison. The women’s remains were arranged in a circle in a room near to the bones of a man who may have been the chief.
Many burial goods were also found in the graves, including “shrouds or clothing constructed of tens of thousands of perforated beads and adorned with amber beads,” ivory artifacts, and gold blade parts. The crystal arrowheads were discovered in a group, leading the experts to conclude they were part of a ritual offering.
What about the dagger? “In conjunction with an ivory hilt and sheath,” it was discovered on its own in a different room. Its form is identical to those of other era daggers, measuring approximately 8.5 inches long. (Of course, the distinction is that the previous daggers were made of flint, but this one is made of crystal.)
Crystal Weapons: What Do They Mean?
The ingredients for these goods would have had to be gathered from afar because there were no crystal mines nearby. This supports the theory that they were designed for a select few who could afford to acquire such materials and have them fashioned into weapons.
It’s also worth noting that none of the weapons were attributed to a single person, but instead appear to have been intended for group usage.
The researchers conclude, “They possibly reflect burial accoutrements exclusively accessible to the aristocracy of this historical period.” “On the other hand, as a raw material with specific meanings and implications, rock crystal must have had a symbolic value.”
According to the literature, “rock crystal and quartz as raw materials signify energy, magical abilities, and a link with ancestors” in some communities.
Though we can’t be certain of their exact purpose, the discovery and study of these weapons continue to give a fascinating insight into the prehistoric cultures that roamed the Earth over 5,000 years ago.
