The Mysterious Black Mailbox In Area 51
This story takes us to the desolate wilderness of the U.S state of Nevada, on the road Nevada State Route 375. The road is mostly unworn, meandering through a rugged topography of desert scrubs. Over vast areas of moonscape and open land, any human can travel miles, without coming across another human soul. It is an uninhabitable remote location, more like a barren wasteland. The existence of a ‘Black Mailbox’, in such a location has become an icon of UFO strangeness and legendary among alien hunters.
Living Yards Away
Nevada State Route 375 has gained a lot of attention for its proximity to the infamous Area 51. The the government keeps flying investigation saucers. It is known as a hotspot for UFO sightings, on its own, infamously known as ” the Extraterrestrial Highway”.
Driving through this sun-blasted barren lands, one will occasionally see a roadside attractions like the spring blooming in the wilds. But amongst all of these, is the Black Mailbox, ever since the 1970s. Steve Medlin, a cowboy and his wife Glenda discovered it back then, when they moved to a sprawling ranch in the Tikaboo Valley. However, The couple, had no knowledge of anything about the supposed top-secret of Area 51. They lived just a stone’s throw away over the mountain, and for years they led a peaceful life, unaware of the black mailbox. This was around 6 miles away from their property. In those days, it was just a normal mailbox and route 375 a normal stretch of highway. Little did n they know that their lives were to take such a weird turn.
The Discovery Black Mailbox
Only during the 1980s, did things start getting a little more strange. The US Airforce suddenly moved into Medlin’s ranching area. The Airforce seized 89,000 acres of public land that Medlin had been using to graze his cattle. They did not provide him with any explanation and instructed him not to graze his cattle there. However, Medlin found a negotiation to graze his cattle in the area, on strict condition that he would keep the Airforce informed about his cattle’s movement, through a special radio provided by them. The couple grew suspicious back then, although they did not question anything, since they did not wan to lose the land. They still knew nothing about Area 51.
Then, in 1989 the former government employee Bob Lazar came out with his spectacular story of working on a secret alien technology, in that area. UFO hunters and alien enthusiasts swarmed into the valley, in the hope of seeing Area 51 and the UFOs.
Mysteries of the Black Mailbox
Apart from this unnecessary attention, somehow people started believing that the Black Mailbox, near the Medlin’s property was in fact used by Area 51. They even claimed that it had appeared in videos Bob Lazar had taken of UFOs of the area. The mailbox was like a mecca for the UFO hunters and curiosity seekers. They would either rifle through the mails or leave their own within it, addressing them to the government or the aliens. Many times, mails were found to be stolen by conspiracy theorists, who considered that the mails were top secret coded messages.
Rumors had it, that the Medlins had a top secret contract with the U.S government to supply cows for cattle mutilation. On rare occasions, there were bullets found in the mailbox. It came to the point where Medlins had to put a heavy padlock on it, to prevent theft.
He even installed another small mailbox marked “aliens” after getting tired of people leaving him mails of extraterrestrials. On top of the extensive rumors of the Black Mailbox being Area 51’s mailbox, the vicinity earned reputation as a hotspot for UFO sightings.
Adventure Tourist Travelers
People drove around the area and camped near it, in the hope of witnessing something otherworldly. Some visitors trained cameras at the ridge over which Area 51 was located, in the hope of seeing alien craft that had been supposedly reverse engineered by the government. Others hoped to see UFOs piloted by the aliens themselves. Still others were hoping that the aliens would whisk them away. Although it was not technically their property, the Medlins viewed all of this with disdain. They did not believe in UFOs or secret alien projects at the base. They just wanted peace and quiet and to be left alone. In the words of Medlin:
“For some reason, Tuesday nights was when they thought the aliens came out. Then it was Wednesdays. They were waiting for the aliens to abduct them, and they were anxious to meet them. . . . We’d just shake our heads. It was so asinine.”
What Remains Today
Over the years, the black mailbox has been stolen various times, its color changed. Sometimes it appeared black, sometimes white, blue and it 2019, black once again. Graffiti and stickers left by visitors, the area surrounded by trash left by tourists. It has remained, an important tourist attraction, people driving long hours into the desert barren lands. They drive into the realms of nothingness, just to take their picture with this lonely black mailbox.
According to Joerg Arnu, the website Dreamlandresort , he said about the Black Mailbox :
“At one point, when I visited the mailbox, I saw that Mulder from The X-Files had signed it. So you know, it became part of Area 51 folklore, and people would still gather there. It was almost like a shrine, it was almost like you had to visit the black mailbox, or your mission is not complete.”
The Medlins were eventually tired of this chaos. In the late, 2020 they put their ranch on the market for an asking price of $4.5 million. It includes two homes, 70 irrigation spots for cattle, a government weather station, 750 head of cattle, and 80 total acres. The mailbox still stands there today. It draws visitors attention to this day. Thus, it is a curious case of an urban legend which has received attention above and beyond. Especially intriguing since the mailbox has managed to continue to show its certainly as a region that holds mysteries of the UFO world.
